Cesarean Statistics and Facts

New Cesarean Statistics Published

Please visit the National ICAN website to read about the new 2006 C-Section rate information recently released.

Cesarean Facts

A cesarean is now the most common major operation performed in America. Two-thirds of all cesareans performed are on first time moms with a vertex presentation or are elective, repeat cesareans on moms with a vertex presentation and one prior low-transverse incision. Cesarean rates are lowest for teenage mothers and increase steadily with maternal age. The 1999 cesarean rate for mothers in their 30s and 40s is approximately double that for teenagers. Of women who attempt VBAC, over 80% succeed.

2004 cesarean statistics from the CDC:

  • Cesarean rate for 2004 is 29.1%
  • The rate is up from 27.6% in 2003
  • U.S. cesareans have risen 40% since 1996
  • First-time cesareans are at an historical high of 20.6%
  • VBAC rate fell to 9.2%
  • Since 1996, the VBAC rate in the U.S. has plummeted 67%

If you find these numbers as alarming as we do, come to a meeting or join Iowa ICAN to see how we can make a difference by working together!
